Hurricane Sandy
- October 31, 2012

Hurricane Sandy was a category 1 hurricane that churned over the Atlantic Ocean and was predicted to head directly to New Jersey, then to Pennsylvania, and then head to New York. But; before Hurricane Sandy reached New Jersey it was categorized as a tropic storm; as it the Northeast, on Sunday. The main part of the tropic storm hits Atlantic city, on October 28, 2012; because of a cold weather front, that is above it and a warm weather front that's below it. This tropic storm is huge and devastating with 40 to 60 MPH winds, but with up to 80 to 100 MPH winds, and there is a low pressure area in the center; that makes strong winds and heavy rain..

On the Internet news, they boardwalk got submerged and they lost 50 foot of it; from Hurricane Sandy that became a tropic storm just before it reached Atlantic City. Atlantic City is only about 3 feet above sea level. ON the news on TV, they said they lost about the whole boardwalk, area. The beach sand there was 125 feet from the ocean shore; but now it is only 25 feet from the ocean shore. The tropic storm picked up water from the Atlantic Ocean and then it rains more heavily on the shore line areas. Picture the slot machines that must have got ruined in the flood, as the water level could have climbed up to 11 feet of water. I had a flashlight, can tuna fish, peanut butter, AA batteries, a 9 volt transistor radio, a cell phone, and a portable 7" LCD TV; ready the day before for when the tropic storm came.

I also had a 2 HP gas generator, duct tape, wax candles, and pliers.

To get ready for the storm the day before I had to bring in any lose items like trash cans, lounge chairs, or flower pots; and put them in the shed. I even had a crystal radio that was tuned to the news radio and weather station; if the power goes out. The Hurricane goes through New Jersey, with high winds and rain showers, from in the afternoon until early in the morning on Tuesday. On Tuesday afternoon there were many sticks and leaves on the drive way that I had to rake away. I brought the trash cans back out of the shed; then I looked for big branches around the yard. There is one tree branch that fell and is on the awning and roof gutter. I trimmed the branches back before from the roof top, so there is not much on the roof. I can use the long ladder and push it off then tie it to the bottom to anchor it; and then cut it with a pole saw. All the other branches that fell in the yard were regular small branches and I put them in the front of the house near the sidewalk. I raked the leaves on the driveway and scooped them into a large plastic trash can. I wore my rain coat, because it was raining very lightly.

As the Hurricane traveled it moved toward Pennsylvania; and some places lost their electricity for about 8 or 9 hours.

The tropic storm moved north again and headed toward New York; In New York the high winds made some sky scrapers crack, and some subways flooded. There were underground parking lots, and underground level underpasses that filled with water. In many other places of the Northeast there were flooding and power outages. Some places that are without power are going to be without electricity, for up to 5 days.

On Wednesday, the tropic storm is weakening; but, it is still moving farther up north; and then maybe even into Canada.

It's hard to believe nature sometimes, a hurricane can wash away a whole beach in a day; like the beach is only a pile of sand. And, now it is part of the ocean; until the sand washes back on the shoreline, again. But; then realizing how a beach can erode or was away like in Atlantic City. Picture where the board walk was; maybe it was the original starting point of the beach that was gradually formed through many many years. Looking at Atlantic City on the news, still made me hungry for eating seafood; so, I went to a Seafood market, and I bought a dozen large chowder clams, and a half pound of seasoned large steamed shrimp. I ate the Chowders first; the 5 smaller ones I ate clams casino style with horseradish sauce. The next 4 I made into clam chowder with milk and butter, and the last 4 I steamed in the microwave like they have at the buffet. Then I ate half of the shrimp; and a bowl of Oriental Maruchan Ramon noodles. They gave me a bakers dozen of clams, altogether. Maybe I got the appetite from the yard cleanup, that I did today? They say that a climate change is happening, that can make hurricanes happen more often; farther up the north coast. But; this was one of the worst storms that many parts of the east coast, has ever had; with many of the areas where the tropic storm has traveled, becoming state of emergency, states. As the tropic storm arrived to different states many places had to evacuate the area; and in other places they closed up places, until the tropic storm passed. In a tropic storm or hurricane different areas are affected more; because, nature takes it's own course.
