Days before the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, there were several strong quakes and then a magnitude 7.3 next occured in the region. Then a magnitude 8.9 struck that was off the coast of Japan, to generate a tsunami that swamped and affected the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
The 8.9 earthquake was Japans biggest earth quake. The earthquake made the ground shake and then it stopped, and it created a large wave that was called a mother wave; that was 70 feet high, up to maybe 80 feet high. The nuclear plant's had to shut down; and some of the plants were damaged. The earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011, and was known as the Great East Japan Earthquake; but a tsunami can happen anywhere in the world. There was already supposed to be a big earth quake in Japan; and there could be a tsunami that is at least as big anywhere from Seattle to Sandiego.
