Crystal Radio Story

Crystal Radio Story

I built a crystal radio kit that had a antenna tuner circuit; that uses a coil position selector, to make the tuner reception more sensitive.

The crystal radio kit originally had one crystal. I added two diodes crystal radio; so now it uses three diodes and it makes the AM stations much louder. The crystal radio was a kit that has a coil selector a tuning capacitor; and a fine tuning capacitor. I added a Fixed Mica Capacitor to the earphones terminals; because it made more radio stations able to be heard; probably because it made the radio wave electrons conduct better.

I built a Crystal Radio detector from a long bolt-less thread; then I used two large alligator clips, that I attached coated wire leads to each of them, an I drilled holes to mount them to a wood block, standing upward. One alligator clip held the bolt-less wire; that I attached a plastic Wire Connector on one side, and a Cats Whisker wire on the other side. The other side held a chunk of Germanium Crystal Rock; that could touch the Cats Whisker wire. Then, I bought different Crystals and I found that the strongest radio sound came from a 1N34A Crystal Diode, a GE 1N69 Crystal Diode, and a 1N38A crystal diode. I built a diode mount to test the crystal radio diodes; by using two small alligator clips that I mounted sideways an I soldered coated wire leads to them; and I used small finishing nails to secure them to a square 1" X 4" wood block.

After I tested the diodes, I attached the Cats Whisker Crystal Detector and the crystal diode mount with a Crystal diode inserted; in series. I connected the two end leads to the crystal terminals. I listened to the sound of a radio station and it played louder then when the Cats Whisker or Crystal Diode sound was, then when they were connected individually; after, I readjusted the Cats Whisker, to the new sweet spot. I found out that the GE 1N34A diode or the 1N38A could be used individually; combined to a 1N34A diode that was used in parallel, to make the crystal radio more louder, also.

I was able to listen to two far away stations, around early in the morning; but, it was all in foreign language, and there was also a foreign music radio station; too. And there were some small stations that were at certain areas of the tuner; but I couldn't separate the different radio signals, separately. As it got near the afternoon the distant and far away stations started to fade, and eventually disappeared. The better the radio crystals work; the more radio stations you can pick up on the crystal radio.
